Get to know yourself better by being more horse-like

Coaching with horses

Equine facilitated coaching makes use of experiential learning with horses. This approach focuses on sensing interactions with your environment through the body. To practice opening up to what presents itself creates a ‘sacred space of possibility’ in which you can experience here and now what is needed to function more fluidly in your life.

  • Do you notice your relationships seem stuck in personal situations or at work?
  • Do you feel like you’ve gotten off course in recent years?
  • Would you like to know more about your emotions and why they arise?
  • Are you looking for tools to live more consciously?
  • Do you struggle with setting boundaries or saying no?

Coaching with horses can give you insight into behavioural patterns that are limiting – which in turn can help you adjust your boundaries and occupy the space you need to feel connected at any moment. One of the cornerstones of the Eponaquest® method, founded 20 years ago by Linda Kohanov, is learning to listen to your body as a sensor, amplifier and inner compass. I provide concrete exercises and tools to learn this.

Session structure and location

I offer individual coaching sessions. A session lasts two hours and is built up around specific reflection/background material and a practical exercise with the horse. Some exercises focus on training concrete skills such as setting boundaries and others on freely exploring your own question or desire. We always start with an exercise to tune into the body. When coaching, I am assisted by Welsh Cob Igor, 24 years old. I have been his caretaker for over four years now. Igor lives in a beautiful green gem near the Haagse Bos on a paddock with walk-out stable.

Yes, besides the longer coaching trajectories, I also offer introductory sessions, single sessions and tailor-made sessions, in consultation.

No, horses do not suffer from human emotions during a coaching session as long as their basic needs (sufficient pasture / hay and water, free roaming space, social contact with kin) are met, and as long as the emotion, at the time it arises, is consciously acknowledged and felt through (this process is called congruence). A recent scientific study shows that on average, horses experience little stress during coaching.

No, if a horse is in pain or shows signs of suffering (indicated, for example, by an apathetic posture, tense facial expression, or change in digestive patterns) it will not be asked to take part. The horse’s wishes come first.

Yes, coaching with horses is definitely suitable for children. I do not focus on this group myself but I would be happy to refer you to suitable colleagues in my network.

About me

I am Sophie, an artist, nature and book lover. Born as middle sibling into a loving multilingual family. Travelling feels like home and rooting is a challenge – which gets easier as I age, I notice. I am driven and sometimes a tad impatient, close friends tell me…. I’m also a people person, and love to create connections between people, and encourage curiosity. I put this sensitivity to good use through equicoaching. Since childhood, I feel like a horse person deep inside. It took me a while to dare to embrace this intuition and to take it seriously. My vision

Over the years, I have become convinced that horses are powerful teachers in the art of being present – to whatever presents itself. Horses are seen as messengers from the other world in many cultures. For example, the ‘wind horse’ is a flying horse that symbolises the human soul in shamanic traditions from East – and Central Asia. Recent research shows that 5500 years ago, a first period of co-existence with the ‘wild horse’ Equus Ferus Przewlaski took place in the Botaï region of Kazakstan.

At the same time, throughout history, domestic horses (descendants of Equus Ferus Caballus) have been used – and exploited – as means of transport, warfare, for status or as a hobby pet. Its first signs of domestication date back to 2200 BC in the North Caucasus. Still, scientific research on horses has only really taken off in the last few decades – with revealing DNA research on the origins of equidae as we know them today and new insights into the cognitive abilities of horses. Notions of animal welfare, non-verbal communication and natural herd behaviour first became known to a wide audience through the Natural Horsemanship method (Pat Parelli, Mark Rashid…). Coaching with horses allows me to play my part in deepening the human-horse relationship.

Clients about Learning with H O R S E S

” I remember shifting from feeling lonely and small in the paddock to relaxed and more aware towards the end, and I liked feeling that sense of calm and reflecting on where I was coming from.”

– Seb

” Igor [the horse] was already responding to me in his behaviour before I realised/understood what I was feeling myself. His reaction felt good and usually meant staying away from me. I also really liked Sophie’s translation and feedback, she brought my thoughts/ideas about the horses back to myself and my own behaviour. “

– Céleste

’ Learning about myself and my limits in contact with a horse was a very nice, positive experience for me. Very nice how Sophie guided that because it felt safe. The horse was like a mirror. When I sighed, Igor sighed.’

– Jeanine
